Gov. Daugaard's Statement On

The Passing Of State Rep. Chuck Turbiville

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard offered the following statement on the death this weekend of State Rep. Charles M. "Chuck" Turbiville:

"I’m very sorry to hear of Chuck Turbiville’s passing. Chuck was a true gentleman. He always worked hard for Deadwood, Lawrence County, and our state. Chuck was a good friend and he made every visit to Deadwood special. Linda and I will miss him and we extend our sympathies to his family."

Turbiville, 75, was a state representative from District 31, which is Lawrence County.  He had previously served as a state representative from 2005-13, and returned to the State House in 2017.  He served as a majority whip in 2007-08 and on the State Legislature's Executive Board from 2009-12, including two years as its chair.

Turbiville was also the Mayor of Deadwood, an office he had held since 2013.

Gov. Daugaard will ask that flags across South Dakota fly at half-staff in honor of Rep. Turbiville on the day of his funeral, which has yet to be set.  The Governor does not plan to appoint a successor to complete the final months of Rep. Turbiville's current term, which ends on January 5, 2019.

Rep. Turbiville is also a candidate for reelection from District 31, and his name will remain on the general election ballot.  If Turbiville is reelected, the newly-elected governor will appoint a replacement to serve in the State House during 2019 and 2020.
