OELRICHS, S.D. – One person died and two others were injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon east of Oelrichs.

Names of those involved are not being released pending notification of family members.

A 1999 Town and Country Chrysler was westbound on U.S. Highway 18 when it crossed the center line into oncoming traffic. As the driver tried to move the vehicle back into the westbound lane, an approaching eastbound 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pickup tried to avoid the first vehicle by also crossing into the westbound lane. That is where the two vehicles collided.

The 72-year-old female driver of the Chrysler was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

Both occupants of the pickup were injured. The male driver, 69, suffered minor injuries and the female passenger, 72, sustained life-threatening injuries. Both were transported by ambulance to the Fall River Hospital in Hot Springs. The female passenger was later sent to Rapid City Regional Hospital. The two occupants were wearing seatbelts.

U.S. Highway 18 was closed for about two hours.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
