HOT SPRINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says a 17.5-mile construction project on Highway 71 from Indian Canyon Road to the Nebraska state line will begin Wednesday, May 22.

The contractor will begin by installing a culvert 2.5 miles north of the Highway 471/71 junction, which will take about three days. Once complete, a new box culvert will be installed which will take about three weeks. The final step will be new asphalt surfacing.

Traffic at the installation of the new box culvert site will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction using temporary concrete barriers and controlled with temporary traffic signals. Motorists can expect a short delay.

The surfacing part of the project is expected to begin in late July and be completed by the end of August.

During asphalt paving’s daylight hours, traffic will be reduced to a single lane in the work zone and controlled by flaggers and a pilot car. Traffic will be restored to normal flow at the end of each day and during nighttime hours. Motorists can expect delays up to 15-minutes and may want to consider an alternate route.

Drivers should be aware of construction workers and equipment adjacent to the driving lane, as well as suddenly slowing, merging and stopped traffic.

The project is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 8, 2019.

The prime contractor on this $3.5 million project is Bituminous Paving, Inc. from Ortonville, Minnesota.
