DPS Day at State Fair Sunday, Sept. 1

PIERRE, S.D. – Attendees at this year’s South Dakota State Fair will be able to learn more about the Department of Public Safety again this year.

This is the fourth consecutive year the department will be in the Day Sponsor Tent next Sunday, Sept. 1.

“This is a great opportunity for the public to better understand what the department and its agencies do,” said DPS Cabinet Secretary Craig Price. “We think that those who stop at our tent will not only learn some new safety ideas, but they also will have fun too.”

Sunday’s theme is “DPS: Share the Road.” Secretary Price said the emphasis is on motorcycle safety.

“This is the time of the year when you see motorcycles on the highways,” he said. “We are using the day to encourage those who ride motorcycles to slow down, pay attention, share the road with others, and wear a helmet.”

The tent will feature display and informational items. South Dakota citizens will also have a chance to renew their driver’s license at the tent. If you intend on renewing your driver’s license, please bring two address documents as required.

Shows will be at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The shows will include Emergency Management mascot Tommy the Turtle who teaches emergency preparedness to children and the ever popular Highway Patrol police service dogs. There is no admission to the shows.

Besides the Sunday Day Tent, DPS will have a booth in the Expo Building on the other days of the fair -- Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 29-31 and then Monday, Sept. 2.
