Specialty Crop Sector in South Dakota
Receives Grant Funding Support

PIERRE, S.D. – In September, the South Dakota Department of Agriculture awarded $342,880 to six specialty crop projects around the state. The funds come from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.

Specialty crops can include everything from fruits and vegetables to honey and hops. This year’s projects include incubator hub sites, year-round production, marketing, education, and increased sales of specialty crops.

This year’s grant recipients include:

  • Cheyenne River Youth Project from Eagle Butte,
  • REDCO Food Sovereignty Initiative from Mission,
  • Heart of the Whetstone Horizons from Corona,
  • South Dakota Specialty Producers Association from Yankton,
  • Western Dakota Technical Institute from Rapid City, and
  • South Dakota State Fair from Huron.

“We have a wide variety of projects this year which are impacting the specialty crop industry. From educating and training about the importance of specialty crops in our state and our homes to projects focused on increasing natural foods knowledge and consumption for our tribal youth, this is a very exciting year for the agriculture industry,” said SDDA Grant and Loan Specialist Nicole Prince.

Agriculture is a major contributor to South Dakota’s economy, generating $32.5 billion in annual economic activity and employing over 132,000 South Dakotans. The South Dakota Department of Agriculture's mission is to promote, protect, and preserve South Dakota agriculture for today and tomorrow.
