Governor Daugaard Names Anderson To Vacant District 16 House Seat
PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced today that he will appoint David L. Anderson to the vacant seat in the State House of Representatives, representing District 16. Anderson will succeed Rep. Patty Miller, who resigned earlier this year.
“Dave is a farmer, businessman, and respected leader in the Canton community and the surrounding area,” said Governor Daugaard. “I was impressed by Dave’s business acumen, his common sense approach, and his strong connection to his community.”
Anderson is the owner of Canton Insurance Agency and the president of the Farm Mutual Insurance Company of Lincoln County. He also farms near Hudson, and is the fifth generation in his family to live on the farm.
Anderson is a graduate of Canton High School and South Dakota State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in agricultural business. For six years, he served on the board of directors of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, and was chairman of the board in 2001-02. He is also a longtime member of the Canton Volunteer Fire Department, and is a member of Lands Lutheran Church in rural Hudson.
Anderson and his wife, Karen, have two children: Dan, who works with Anderson in his insurance business, and Rachel Rasmussen, who is an attorney in Beresford. They also have three granddaughters. Anderson’s father, Larry Anderson, was a state representative from the same area from 1971-81.
“I am honored to be selected to serve the people of District 16,” said Anderson. “I look forward to working with Rep. Bolin and Sen. Ledermen, as well as the many other elected officials from our cities, counties, townships and school boards.”
Anderson’s appointment is effective immediately. He will serve the remainder of Rep. Miller’s term, which expires after the 2014 general election. District 16 includes all of Union County, and southern and eastern portions of Lincoln County, including the cities of Worthing, Canton, Beresford, and Hudson.
