Interstate 29 Multiple Injury Crash

Where: Interstate 29, mile marker 74, one mile south of I-229 interchange
Driver 1: William Burns, 68, Sioux Falls, minor injuries
Passenger 1: Carolyn Burns, 67, Sioux Falls, serious non-life threatening injuries
Vehicle 1: 2008 Ford F250 pickup
Driver 2: Rachel Nelson, 46, Medford, WI, serious non-life threatening injuries
Passenger 1: Donald Nelson, 46, Medford, WI, minor injuries
Passenger 2: Derek Nelson, 20, Medford, WI, minor injuries
Passenger 3: Nick Nelson, 22, Medford, WI, serious non-life threatening injuries
Vehicle 2: 1995 Lincoln Towncar
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Six people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Monday morning on Interstate 29 about a mile south of the Interstate 229 interchange.
William Burns, 68, of Sioux Falls was driving a 2008 Ford F250 pickup southbound on I-29. He had entered the interstate from I-229 and was passing a truck when the pickup slid into the median and then into the northbound lanes of traffic. The pickup and a northbound 1995 Lincoln Towncar collided. Both vehicles went into the east ditch.
Burns suffered minor injuries. A passenger in the pickup, Carolyn Burns, 67, of Sioux Falls, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries.
Rachel Nelson, 46, of Medford, Wisconsin, was driving the Lincoln. She suffered serious non-life threatening injuries, as did passenger Nick Nelson, 22, of Medford. Two other passengers, Donald Nelson, 46, and Derek Nelson, 20, also of Medford, suffered minor injuries. All of the occupants of the two vehicles were taken to a Sioux Falls hospital.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Sioux Falls Police Department, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, Tea Fire Department and Rural Metro assisted.
