Progress continues on US212 construction, highway remains closed
FRANKFORT/DOLAND, S.D. – South Dakota Department of Transportation officials say the reconstruction of US212 between Frankfort and Doland is nearing completion, but they remind motorists that the roadway is still closed to through traffic.
“There’s just a little over a month left until the highway reopens, but for now traffic is still being directed to the detour,” said SDDOT Engineering Supervisor Brad Letcher. “We appreciate folks’ patience and cooperation as crews work to improve this section of road.”
Letcher expects the roadway to reopen in early November as scheduled. Until then, traffic is directed to use US281, SD28 and 406th Avenue as a detour. Access has been maintained for residents and landowners along the eight-mile section, which was closed to through traffic when construction began in late April.
The project includes salvaging in-place surfacing, installations of new drainage culverts, new bridge construction, complete re-grading, interim surfacing, fencing and erosion control.
Currently, crews are finishing grading, hauling base course and seeding. Permanent surfacing will be placed next year. The overall completion date is June 2008.
The contractor of the $5.1 million project is R & G Construction Company of Marshall, Minn.
