Changes Made to Speed up Omaha Street Reconstruction

Beginning after Labor Day, the Omaha Street Reconstruction project schedule will change from the original plans. Utility crews will begin installing a sanitary sewer line at the East Boulevard intersection. Work will then progress westward toward 5th Street in one-block increments. As work is completed in one block, crews will place a temporary asphalt surface over the work area.

Traffic will be reduced to a single lane in the eastbound direction during this work period. Westbound traffic will be unaffected. Crews will continue working westward toward 5th Street until the beginning of December.

The result of this work during the fall and winter months of 2003 will result in a quicker completion of the project in 2004. Crews will close the 5th Street intersection on March 8, 2004 and will completely close Omaha Street on April 1, 2004. The 5th Street intersection will reopen by July 1, 2004, and Omaha Street will reopen by July 12, 2004. Under the old plan, crews would completely close 5th Street and Omaha Street on April 1, 2004. Fifth Street would have opened by July 1, 2004 and Omaha Street would have opened by August 4, 2004.
