PIERRE, S.D. – Since the reopening of Interstate 90 from Rapid City to Chamberlain Monday morning, the South Dakota Highway Patrol has responded to nine crashes on the interstate. Two of those resulted in injuries. Another 19 motorists required assistance from the Highway Patrol.
The Departments of Public Safety and Transportation would like to take this opportunity to remind travelers that the roads still have slick spots and some snow pack.
“We did open the interstate back up, but travel conditions are still less than ideal,” said Col. Dan Mosteller, Highway Patrol Superintendent. “People need to drive responsibly, take it slow and buckle up.”
The Department of Transportation will continue to use all of its resources to improve driving conditions on state highways.
“We are encouraged by the number of motorists checking on road conditions,” said Judy Payne, Department of Transportation Secretary. “As of late this afternoon, we had 25,303 calls to the 511 road condition hotline and more than 16-thousand hits on the safetravelusa website. That shows a whole lot of people out there are taking the initiative to check the conditions before hitting the road.”
On Sunday, 30,293 calls were made to 511. The calls inquired about 45,903 different road segments and as many as 134 calls were answered at one time. No calls were missed.
