Homeland Security Threat Level Raised

PIERRE -- As of 1:00 p.m. (CT), Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, the Homeland Security Alert System is being elevated to the Orange/High level.  This rise in the alert level is not a result of specific threats to South Dakota, or the United States in general; it is the result of multiple intelligence sources that indicate the increased possibility for terrorist activity.

“During the holiday season, citizens in South Dakota will see an increase in law enforcement during the heightened security alert,” said Governor Mike Rounds. “A number of people will be traveling to visit friends and family during the holidays.  This action is no way intended to discourage those travel plans.”

Increased security is a deterrent to any potential threat.  Citizens are advised to remain alert to any abnormal activities around critical infrastructure, airports, dams or federal and state buildings.
