PIERRE, S.D. – The following are news tips from offices and agencies within South Dakota State Government:
 
Sunday, October 7, 4 a.m.–12 p.m. (CDT) - The SD Bureau of Information and Telecommunications (BIT) will be doing maintenance upgrades on the state's computer network. All computer network connectivity to and from state government will be unavailable at this time. This means that access to state workers via e-mail, the state’s websites, any departmental applications, etc. will not be available during the 4:00 am - 12:00 pm window.
 
Sunday-Saturday, October 7-13 – National Fire Prevention Week - A plan doesn’t do you much good, unless you practice it. That’s why the South Dakota Fire Marshal's Office is encouraging families all across South Dakota to practice their home fire escape plans during National Fire Prevention Week. The campaign runs Oct. 7-13, 2007. Week of October 8-12, Various locations/times - Long-Term Care Partnership Program Education Sessions to be held – Receive unbiased information on the South Dakota Long-Term Care Partnership Program and have a chance to speak with an expert in the long-term care industry. Stop by any of the locations listed below during the week to find out more about long-term care, the costs related to it, what Medicare and Medicaid will cover and how the Long-Term Care Partnership Program can help. The education sessions are free and open to the public. Each session is scheduled for one hour. 
Belle Fourche: Monday, October 8 - Sessions will be held at 9 a.m., noon and 5:30 p.m. 
     Location: Belle Fourche Regional Medical Clinic, 2200 13th Ave
Spearfish: Tuesday, October 9 - Sessions will be held at 9 a.m., noon and 5:30 p.m.
     Location: Spearfish Regional Hospital, 1440 N. Main
Rapid City: Wednesday, October 10 - Sessions will be held at 9 a.m.,
noon and 6 p.m.
     Location: Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, Room 102, 444 N. Mount Rushmore Road
Deadwood: Thursday, October 11 - Sessions will be held at 9 a.m.,
noon and 5:30 p.m.
     Location: Deadwood Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau, 767 Main Street
Sturgis: Friday, October 12 - Sessions will be held at 9 a.m.,
noon and 5:30 p.m.
     Location: Sturgis Chamber of Commerce, 2040 Junction Ave.
In November, education sessions will be held in the following communities:
Aberdeen, Mobridge, Eagle Butte, Gettysburg and Pierre. If you are unable to attend an education session, free educational conference calls are also available by calling Heather at 605-336-1745. Monday-Wednesday, October 8-10, Minneapolis, Minn. - Tyler Sharp and Billie Jo Waara of the Office of Tourism, along with a representative of the Black Hills, Badlands and Lakes tourism association, will attend MLT University. MLTUniversity (MLT U) is a trade show designed to assist travel agents with selling and promoting MLT Preferred Destinations. The Black Hills of South Dakota is one such destination and it is considered very prestigious to have a destination be qualified as MLT Preferred. The representatives in attendance will give two one-hour presentations on the attractions, accommodations, activities and highlights throughout the Black hills. Monday, October 8, Yankton, 7 p.m. (CDT) – The Mental Illness Awareness Week Candlelight Vigil will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 403 Broadway Avenue, Yankton. Everyone is invited to attend this annual event in recognition of National Mental Illness Awareness Week, which is set for October 7 – 13, 2007. Monday, October 8, Rapid City, 7 p.m. (MDT) - The South Dakota Board of Regents will hold a Town Meeting on South Dakota public higher education at the City/School Administration Center, located at 300 6th Street. Tuesday-Sunday, October 9-14 - Gov. Mike Rounds will attend a Midwestern Governors Association European Study trip to the European countries of Belgium and Germany. Also attending are SD Department of Agriculture Secretary William Even and Tourism and State Development Secretary Richard Benda.  This trip will focus on agricultural trade and rural development programs in Europe.   For more information, contact Mitch Krebs, (605) 773-3212.

Tuesday, October 9, Winner, 7 p.m. (CDT) - The South Dakota Board of Regents will hold a Town Meeting on South Dakota public higher education at Winner High School (room 208), located at 431 East 7th Street. Wednesday, October 10, Sioux Falls, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (CDT) - The SD Dept. of Labor’s Sioux FallsCareerCenter will be holding a Job Search Assistance Program (JSAP) at 811 E. 10th Street. The JSAP is designed to assist and train job seekers on how to find and secure employment. Some of the topics included are networking, the hidden job market, resumes, applications, and proper interview techniques. It is provided at no charge and open to the public. Thursday, October 11, Rapid City, Army Aviation Support Facility, 10 a.m. (MDT) - Deployment Ceremony - Soldiers from Detachment 3, Company A, 641st Aviation, South Dakota Army National will be honored during a deployment ceremony at the Army Aviation Support Facility near the Rapid City Regional Airport. The South Dakota Army National Guard unit will deploy for six to 12 months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Friday October 12, Rapid City, Ramkota Best Western Convention Center, 1 p.m. (MDT) - Golden Coyote 2008 Initial Planning Conference - The South Dakota National Guard will be hosting a General Session of the Golden Coyote 2008 Initial Planning Conference at the Ramkota Best Western Convention Center. There will be approximately 200 to 250 military leaders from the South Dakota National Guard and other states to discuss upcoming plans for the 2008 training exercise held in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
