Gov. Rounds announces the program for Vermillion Capital for a Day
PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds and his team are taking state government to the people during Capital for a Day in Vermillion on April 20, 2005. The public is invited to join the activities starting at 3 p.m. (CT) at the Vermillion High School.
“Capital for a Day gives everyone who attends an opportunity to learn more about our state, and our government,” said Gov. Rounds. “I’m looking forward to visiting Vermillion to learn more about the community and to visit with people living in and around Clay County.”
“I’m encouraging the public to mark April 20 on their calendar,” said Mayor Dan Christopherson. “They should plan to participate in the activities and interact with Gov. Rounds, First Lady Jean Rounds, and the various departments, as the business of state government is conducted in Vermillion.”
The day’s schedule of events is as follows:
- 1 - 3 p.m. (CT): Department meetings and tours, Vermillion Community
- 3 - 6 p.m.: Capital for a Day booths, Vermillion High School – East Commons: Governor Rounds & Cabinet are available to the public
- 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.: First Lady’s Reach Out and Read, Vermillion High School – Library - One of First Lady Jean Rounds’ initiatives is to share the joys of reading with children starting at a young age. Children are invited to join her for story time at the library.
- 5 - 6:30 p.m.: Community Dinner, Vermillion High School – Gymnasium - The community is invited to eat with all Capital for a Day participants. The city of Vermillion is providing a discounted meal for adults, $5, and for children and students, $3.
- 6:30 p.m.: Governor Mike Rounds, Vermillion High School – Performing Arts Center - The governor will speak, and then ask for questions and advice from the community.
In 2005, Gov. Rounds, First Lady Jean Rounds, Cabinet Secretaries, and various state agencies also plan to visit Sisseton in May, Martin in June, Canistota in July, Eureka in August, and Platte in September.
In the past two years, Gov. Rounds and his staff have traveled to 11 communities across South Dakota for Capital for a Day events. These communities include: Brookings, Sturgis, Wessington Springs, Lemmon, Aberdeen, Hot Springs, Yankton, Faith, Britton, Wall, and Chamberlain.
