Chip Seal and Fog Seal Projects in the Mitchell Area

 

MITCHELL, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says chip seal and fog seal applications will be applied to several highways in the Mitchell area of the state.  The contractor will move from one project to the next in the following order:

 

  1. U.S. Highway 18 – 25 miles, from Burke east to just east of the Highway 43 junction. The chip seal will begin on Tuesday, May 26, and take approximately seven days to complete. The fog seal will take approximately another four days to complete.
  2. S.D. Highway 43 – One mile, from the Nebraska border north to Highway 18.   Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is one day. The fog seal will take approximately another day to complete.
  3. U.S. Highway 281 – One mile, from the Nebraska border north to Highway 18. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is one day. The fog seal will take approximately another day to complete.
  4. S.D. Highway 50 – 27 miles, from just north of Interstate 90 at Exit 272 (Pukwana) south and east to southeast of Academy. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is six days. The fog seal will take approximately another three days to complete.
  5. S.D Highway 50 – Nine miles, from Chamberlain north to the Buffalo County Line. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is two days. The fog seal will take approximately another two days to complete.
  6. Interstate 90 – Eight miles, Chamberlain Rest Area ramps; ramps and crossroads at exits 265 and 289; ramps at exits 272 and 284 and crossroads at mile markers 270.19, 281.13, 287.21, 292.22 and 294.14. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on these locations is four days. The fog seal will take approximately another two days to complete.
  7. S.D. Highway 34 – 21 miles, from the Highway 45 east junction to east of Wessington Springs. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is five days. The fog seal will take approximately another three days to complete.
  8. S.D. Highway 34 – One mile, through Woonsocket. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is one day. The fog seal will take approximately another day to complete.
  9. S.D. Highway 262 – 17 miles, from Alexandria east through Bridgewater. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is four days. The fog seal will take approximately another three days to complete.
  10. S.D. Highway 38 – 17 miles, from Salem east to Humboldt. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section of highway is four days. The fog seal will take approximately another three days to complete.
  11. U.S. Highway 81 – One mile, through Salem. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is one day. The fog seal will take approximately another day to complete.
  12. Interstate 90 Loop 43 – 1.5 miles, Havens Avenue through Mitchell. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section of highway is two days. The fog seal will take approximately another two days to complete.
  13. S.D. Highway 37 – One mile, through Parkston. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is one day. The fog seal will take approximately another day to complete.

 

On the rural routes and through Salem, traffic will be reduced to one lane and guided through the project with the use of flaggers and a pilot car. A delay of up to 15 minutes can be expected while traveling through the work area during daytime hours.

 

On the Woonsocket, Mitchell and Parkston routes, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction with lane closures.

 

Loose gravel will be present for a period of 36 to 72 hours after each day’s chip seal application. Traffic should travel at 40 mph or the posted speed limit if it is less than 40 mph, during this time frame. The permanent pavement marking is scheduled to be applied within 14 days of completion of the chip and fog seal projects.

 

Bituminous Paving, Inc. from Ortonville, Minnesota, is the prime contractor on the $4.9 million project.
