PIERRE -- Cowboy poet Robert Dennis will bring his unique blend of poetry and song to the South Dakota State Historical Society at the Cultural Heritage Center on Sunday, March 18. Dennis will be performing at 2:30 p.m. during the opening reception for The Frontier in American Culture, a traveling exhibit in the museum from March 18 through May 6. The reception will run from 2 to 4 p.m. with free admission to the museum on that day.
Dennis was raised on the ranch homesteaded by his grandfather and father at the turn of the century near Red Owl, SD. Early on he developed a knack for making rhymes, but only began writing down his stories and verse in 1985 when he first heard about "cowboy poetry."
Dennis was invited to perform at the national cowboy poetry gatherings in Elko, Nev., in 1989, 1990 and 1997. He sings old and new cowboy songs and recites traditional cowboy poetry along with his original poems and stories. He has recently had several stories published.
