Get Ready for Summertime Fun at SD Outdoor Expo

HURON, S.D. — Summer is just around the corner, and opportunities to enjoy family time outdoors are close at hand. The South Dakota Outdoor Expo, coming to the State Fairgrounds in Huron June 13-14, is a great chance to get outside and learn a few new activities the entire family can enjoy all season long.

This free event will feature nearly 100 hands-on activities and outdoor recreation booths. Visitors can paddle a kayak, shoot a bow and arrow, cast a fishing rod, partake in a mock pheasant hunt, build a bird feeder and much more.

“In South Dakota, outdoor recreation is a big part of our everyday lives,” said Alison Kiesz, Outdoor Expo Coordinator. “The Outdoor Expo gives families an opportunity to try out many outdoor activities, and use the skills they learn to continue that activity once they get home. With interactive exhibits featuring everything from archery to bird watching, there is sure to be something for everyone.”

South Dakotans also have a chance to “Show Us Your Wild Side!,” by entering the Jack Link’s Photo Contest. To enter, simply e-mail a photo of your favorite South Dakota outdoor activity — hunting, camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, or any other adventure to: sdoutdoorexpo@state.sd.us

Anything goes in the photo contest as long as the activity took place in South Dakota.

Entries will be posted to the Outdoor Expo Web site and the winning photos will be chosen on June 1. The winner will receive a one-year’s supply of beef jerky, courtesy of Jack Link’s.

The Outdoor Expo is also teaming up with Pheasant Phun of Hitchcock to provide a free, guided pheasant hunt for one lucky young hunter. Youth ages 12-17 can sign up at the shotgun range during the Outdoor Expo. The winner and an accompanying adult will receive a free hunting package to use during the youth pheasant hunting season, October 3-7, 2009.

Sponsors that help make the SD Outdoor Expo possible include: Spader’s RV Center, Scheels, SD Parks & Wildlife Foundation, SD Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Cabela’s, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Jack’s Campers, Wildlife Protection, Inc., Prostrollo Motor Sales, the Weatherby Foundation, the SD Office of Tourism, the SD Department of Game, Fish and Parks, Pepsi, Modern Woodmen of America, the Strassman Fund, Pheasant Phun, Jack Link’s, and the Varmint Hunters Association.
