Penitentiary staff member injured in assault by inmate

(Sioux Falls, S.D.)- A security staff member at the Jameson Annex to the South Dakota State Penitentiary is recovering after being assaulted by a state prison inmate last evening.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. on April 20, Inmate Carlos Green punched Corporal Zane Mathis in the head several times. The inmate was handcuffed by other staff and locked up in a disciplinary section of the prison. The Jameson Annex was placed in lock down status as a precautionary measure for the remainder of the evening.

Corporal Mathis was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital for treatment. He suffered a fractured jaw and facial lacerations in the assault.

Green, age 28, is currently serving a 35 year sentence for aggravated assault, a consecutive 5 year sentence for eluding a police officer and a consecutive 2 year sentence for sliming. All of the sentences are from Brown County.

The lock down of the Jameson Annex was lifted today and the prison is fully operational.
