Janklow Proclaims Afterschool Week Oct. 7-13

(Pierre) – South Dakota communities have an opportunity to recognize the critical role quality afterschool programs play in improving academic achievement, helping working families and keeping kids safe, said Gov. Bill Janklow. The Governor has proclaimed Oct. 7-13 "South Dakota Cares About Afterschool Week."

Afterschool programs from across the state will join with thousands of communities nationwide during this week and on Oct. 11 for "Lights On Afterschool!," a day of nationwide rallies to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs for our children, families and communities. Afterschool programs in South Dakota will hold activities such as open houses featuring special children’s programs, poster and letter writing campaigns, and afterschool rallies at football games and other events.

"Studies clearly show that quality afterschool programs can make a powerful difference," Janklow said. "This week will provide an opportunity for programs to invite community members to learn about the importance of afterschool programs. Communities can also use this week to show kids that they care about their future."

Afterschool program directors and staff will finish the week by attending the annual South Dakota School-Age Care Alliance (SoDakSACA) State Conference Oct. 12-13 in Spearfish. The conference will feature quality workshops specific to school-age care and provide networking opportunities for staff, directors and others.

Janklow began an initiative four years ago encouraging communities from across the state to develop quality programs at elementary and middle schools to provide enrichment opportunities for students in their out-of-school time. To date, there are more than 150 afterschool programs statewide.
