State Rep. Hansen To Step Aside - Governor Asks For Public Input
PIERRE, S.D. – State Rep. Jon Hansen has announced plans to resign from his seat in the South Dakota House of Representatives. Hansen, a Republican from Dell Rapids, is resigning to attend law school at the University of South Dakota.
“It is through much thought and prayer that I have decided to take this opportunity to further my education,” Hansen said. “It has been a great honor to serve my district as a representative, and I am forever appreciative of their support”
Hansen, a Republican from Dell Rapids, has served in the state House since 2011. He represents District 25, which includes north and east Minnehaha County, including the cities of Dell Rapids, Baltic, Garretson, Colton, Lyons, Valley Springs, and Rowena. It also includes the area in eastern Sioux Falls near South Sycamore Avenue and East 26th Street.
“I wish Rep. Hansen the best as he pursues his education,” said Gov. Daugaard. “In his second term, Jon has already stood out as a leader, and I hope to see him return to public service in the future.”
The resignation, which Hansen plans to officially submit in early August, will create a vacancy that will be filled by a gubernatorial appointment, and the Governor is asking members of the public to nominate candidates to fill the position.
“I want to find a legislator who can be an effective representative of District 25,” Gov. Daugaard said. “I appreciate nominations from the public as I consider candidates for this vacancy.”
The district includes Governor Daugaard’s hometown of Dell Rapids, and the Governor represented much of the current district as a state Senator from 1997-2003.
Those wishing to offer nominations should contact Will Mortenson in the Office of the Governor at 605-773-5999.
Nominations should include the candidate’s name, current address, telephone number, and relevant background information. Those interested can verify residency in the district with the county auditor.
Gov. Daugaard expects to name an appointee prior to Hansen’s resignation in August.
