Pierre, S.D. – Today, the South Dakota Department of Education (DOE) announced that a fifth cohort of the South Dakota Teacher Apprenticeship Pathway (SD TAP) program will be offered. Current paraprofessionals and teacher aides are encouraged to apply before the Nov. 10 deadline.
“Allowing more individuals who are already passionate about working in a school an opportunity to earn their bachelor’s degree in education to pursue teacher certification is a win for everyone,” said Secretary of Education Dr. Joseph Graves. “Schools need more teachers, and this program accommodates current paraprofessionals to continue serving their districts while striving to achieve their goal of becoming a certified educator.”
SD TAP’s Cohort 5 is open for applications until 5:00 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Nov. 10. All applicants must be employed as a paraprofessional or teacher aide with a South Dakota-accredited school. Following the applicant’s submission, school districts will be required to complete a recommendation form once they are contacted by DOE.
This cohort will begin in January 2027, and selected candidates will complete their coursework for elementary education or special education through Dakota State University or coursework for secondary education through Northern State University. Towards the end of their two-year program, the apprentices will complete student-teaching in their home district.
“Teachers play a foundational role in setting our students up for success,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “This program builds up quality teachers, strengthens our education system, and allows educators to continue making a difference in their hometowns.
