Vietnam War Memorial Commemorative Plates Not for Actual Use

(PIERRE, SD) – South Dakota Vietnam Era veterans who received a commemorative license plate in their gift bags during last month’s South Dakota Vietnam War Memorial Dedication are welcome to display the plate on their vehicles, as long as their regular issue license plates are still displayed in their usual place. That according to officials with the South Dakota Department of Revenue and Regulation, Division of Motor Vehicles.

Division Director Debra Hillmer says the commemorative license plate was intended as a keepsake for veterans attending the event and are not valid for use as an actual license plate on a vehicle. Hillmer says individuals found to be using the commemorative plate in lieu of a regular plate can be ticketed.

“To be properly licensed in South Dakota, a vehicle must display regular registration plates as issued by a county treasurer on both the front and back of the vehicle,” Hillmer said. “If a person is stopped by law enforcement with a commemorative license plate in either position instead of a regular issue plate, the vehicle would be considered to be in violation of those licensing laws.”

Veterans wanting to display their South Dakota Vietnam War Memorial Dedication commemorative plate on their vehicles can double bolt the plate above their actual license plates or display the plate in their windshield or back window, so long as it doesn’t obstruct the driver’s view.
