“Fresh Start” Statewide Virtual Hiring Event
PIERRE, S.D. – The Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) is hosting a “Fresh Start” virtual hiring event on Thursday, Aug. 22 from 1 to 5 p.m. CDT/12 to 4 p.m. MDT.
This event is designed for justice-involved individuals but is open to all job seekers. This includes those seeking a fresh start, a new job opportunity, or a chance to showcase skills to employers.
Interested individuals needing help with a resume or cover letter before attending the event can contact a Job Service office to schedule an appointment with an employment specialist.
DLR has programs and services for employers willing to hire individuals whose backgrounds may pose barriers to securing or retaining employment. These financial protections and tax benefits make it easier to consider such candidates. Given the low unemployment rate in South Dakota, exploring these programs could help employers tap into valuable, yet underutilized labor pools.
The Federal Bonding Program provides bonds as incentives for employers who are willing to hire justice-involved individuals including those recovering from opioid and other drug addictions. There is no cost for applicants or employers.
The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) is a federal income tax credit encouraging employers to hire individuals in certain targeted groups consistently experiencing high rates of unemployment due to a variety of employment barriers. This includes a person convicted or released from prison in the last 12 months after a felony conviction.
