Advanced Placement Institutes Open to Teachers
PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota’s public universities are offering specialized instruction to help teachers become better prepared to teach Advanced Placement (AP) subjects in high school.
Ten AP institutes are being held this summer at the six campuses, beginning June 6 and continuing through July. Teachers who do not want academic credit are charged a $50 materials fee. Teachers and qualified teacher education students may opt to take the workshops for academic credit at state-support tuition and fee rates. Room and board packages on campus also are available.
The AP program offers students the opportunity to take college-level coursework while still in high school. The AP classes, in 19 subject areas, are equivalent to a first-year college course and can be taught by high school teachers who follow certain course guidelines. “By taking a College Board AP exam at the end of the course, and earning a qualifying score, high school students may earn credit or advanced standing at most of the nation’s colleges and universities,” said Regents Executive Director Robert T. Tad Perry.
Perry said the public university system offers these workshops to high school teachers because the universities benefit when more schools and students participate in the College Board AP program. “This is an excellent way for high schools to prepare their students for college-level work,” he said.
