Students construct future plans at Construction Career Awareness Day

PIERRE/FORT PIERRE, S.D. – Pierre/Fort Pierre area high school students will learn more about careers in construction Tuesday as they join South Dakota Department of Transportation staff and representatives of the highway construction industry for Construction Career Awareness Day.

The annual event pairs high school students interested in the construction field with contractors, safety directors, laborers, and equipment engineers. Students will try their hand at navigating construction equipment through an obstacle course and tour several construction projects in the area.

“We are proud to be a sponsor of an event that gives students hands-on activities and a chance to see what career opportunities are available in the highway construction industry,” said June Hansen of the Department of Transportation. “It’s a great way for students to learn first-hand from experts in the construction field about the industry itself and its importance to maintaining the state’s infrastructure.”

The event will take place Tuesday (Sept. 25), at the Expo Building at the Stanley County Fairgrounds in Fort Pierre from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Approximately 200 area students are expected to participate.

Construction Career Awareness Day is sponsored by the South Dakota Department of Transportation, Associated General Contractors of South Dakota, and the Federal Highway Administration. The first event was held in Sioux Falls on Sept. 20. Events are also planned in Aberdeen on Sept. 27 and Rapid City on Oct. 4. Statewide, approximately 875 students from over 30 schools are expected to participate.
