South Dakota Launches Expanded Opioid Settlement Funding Framework

Article Body

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS), in partnership with the Opioid Advisory Committee, has launched an updated Opioid Settlement Funding Framework that expands opportunities for communities and organizations to combat opioid misuse.

“This new framework encourages local collaboration and sets clear expectations for demonstrating outcomes through data,” said DSS Cabinet Secretary Matt Althoff. “We also streamlined the application process in response to community feedback and in recognition of the increase in available settlement funds. We continue to welcome proposals that fill gaps in community resources and improve outcomes for South Dakotans.”

The new framework offers a broader range of award amounts supporting both small and large projects. With a more predictable flow of funds, it aims to strengthen existing prevention, treatment, recovery, and relapse reduction efforts aligned with South Dakota’s statewide plan.

Key Improvements include:

  • Three distinct funding opportunities tailored to different project scopes;
  • A streamlined online application;
  • Focus on identifying a specific problem or gap and encouraging innovative solutions; and
  • Technical assistance for applicants.

Eligible applicants include state agencies, counties and municipalities, nonprofits, mental health and healthcare providers, schools, tribal entities, faith-based organizations, and other entities supporting opioid recovery and prevention.
