Work Progressing on Fort Pierre Intersection Project

PIERRE – Although rain received last week has caused minor delays, the intersection reconstruction project on US Highway 83 and US Highway 14 / SD Highway 34 is only slightly behind schedule, according to Department of Transportation officials.

Morris, Inc., the prime contractor on the project, is continuing work on tasks included in Phase One of the project. Trees are being cleared to make way for a new drainage channel along the D, M & E railroad tracks from US 14 / SD 34 to the Missouri River. A new 18-inch storm sewer line is being installed along the service road in front of Pizza Ranch.

Stabilizing the subgrade with geogrid membrane and base material in an area east of the Holiday Inn Express is progressing. This is where the new Yellowstone Street will be located.

Phase Two of the project, which will alter traffic flow, is scheduled to begin about June 19.

The Department of Transportation is maintaining a web page with information on the project. It can be found on the Department’s web site at www.sddot.com under "Construction Projects." The web page includes the new design layout, the different phases of construction, photos, and other project information. The web page will be updated weekly as work on the new interchange continues.

Questions about the project can be directed to Norm Konechne with the Department of Transportation at 773-5294.
