Articulation Agreements Smooth Path for Transfer Students
BROOKINGS, S.D. – More students are taking advantage of credit-transfer opportunities between the state’s four technical institutes and the public university system in South Dakota.
“The number of students transferring held fairly constant for a number of years, but we have seen some increases over the past three years,” said Jack Warner, executive director and CEO for the South Dakota Board of Regents. Last fall, there were 272 transfers into the public universities from the technical institutes, up from 192 in 2006.
Warner credits the uptick to an increased number of credit-transfer agreements between the tech schools and universities, referred to as articulation agreements. “The idea is to efficiently and effectively provide more options for students within the given mission of each institution,” Warner said.
This week, the regents approved a new credit-transfer agreement between The University of South Dakota and Lake Area Technical Institute to permit technical school students to more easily complete the bachelor of science degree in medical laboratory science at USD. Regents also adopted revisions to an existing set of credit transfer agreements between South Dakota State University and Lake Area Technical Institute. In most cases, the number of Lake Area transfer credits being accepted at SDSU will go up.
With the newest agreement approved, it brings the number of credit-transfer agreements system-wide to 256. Total number of agreements at each institution breaks down as follows:
Public Universities Technical Institutes
Black Hills State University 24 Lake Area Technical Institute 69
Dakota State University 55 Mitchell Technical Institute 23
Northern State University 39 Southeast Technical Institute 126
South Dakota State University 67 Western Dakota Technical Institute 38
University of South Dakota 71
