Governor Rounds names Secretary of Tourism and State Development

PIERRE – Gov. Mike Rounds announced Friday that John Calvin has been named Secretary for the Department of Tourism and State Development.

“John is a very successful, well-respected, businessman and entrepreneur who brings a wealth of experience to our organization” said Gov. Rounds.  “His leadership abilities and management style are just what we are looking for to lead the new organization.”

Calvin, of Watertown, is the President and CEO of J. Scott Industries of Watertown.  This operating company was formed after he sold his Angus-Palm Industries to its employees in 1996.  Mr. Calvin is highly regarded as a broad-based senior executive with a wide range of experience in marketing, sales, manufacturing operations, finance and administration.

Calvin is a graduate of the University of Michigan.  He is married to the former Prudence Knox of Canistota. He has two grown sons and one grown daughter.  His hobbies include hunting, fishing and boating.

“I am delighted that the governor has selected me.” said Mr. Calvin on his appointment. “I have a great deal of respect for the responsibilities assigned to me.  I am establishing a residency in Pierre, and my wife and I will be back and forth from our Lake Kampeska home in Watertown.  I look forward to working with the great people currently in the department to promote all aspects of tourism and state development.”

The Department of Tourism and State Development is part of Gov. Rounds’ Executive Reorganization Order, which combines the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, Department of Tourism, Office of Tribal Relations, Division of Cultural Affairs, and the South Dakota Housing Development Authority.
