SPEARFISH, SD – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says crews will begin making preparations for asphalt surfacing on Interstate 90 from Exit 10 to the Wyoming state line on Monday, April 25.

Initially, crews will be working on the ramps at Exit 8, Exit 2 and the rest area. All ramps will remain open to traffic during construction. The mainline asphalt paving operation is scheduled to begin the first week of June.

During the paving, traffic will be reduced to one lane with a 16-foot width restriction. The speed limit will be lowered to 65 mph in the lane closure areas and further reduced to 45 mph when workers are present.

Motorists are asked to watch for suddenly slowing traffic, merging lanes, modified traffic patterns for exit on/off ramps and construction equipment and workers adjacent to the driving lane.

The field work completion date for the project is Oct. 1.

The prime contractor for the $11.1 million dollar project is Bituminous Paving, Inc. from Ortonville, Minnesota.
