Started:  Reported about 1400 hours, 6-29-02

Property Threatened:  Community of Deadwood, Boulder Canyon, forest land

Incident Commander;  Joe Lowe, SD Dept. of Agriculture, Wildland Fire Suppression Division.

Personnel Assigned to Fire:  250+

Resources:  numerous hand crews, structual and wildland fire engines, 6 dozers, over 100 law enforcement officers from state, county and city; 7 heavy air tankers.

Estimated Containment:  Unknown

Estimated Control:  Unknown

Damage:  Eight structures lost, at least two primary residences.  Forest land.

Evacuations:  Voluntary, not mandatory

Evacuees have been sent to Donald Young Center at Black Hills State University in Spearfish and Camp Rapid in Rapid City.

Road Closures:

Highway 85 south at quarry a few miles south of I-90
Highway 85 north at Lead
Boulder Canyon road about two miles south of Sturgis
Highway 385 North at Nemo road

Outlook for 6-30-02:  The weather forecast for today is high temperature near 90 degrees, relative humidity dropping to 14%.  Winds will be out of the NW 5-15 this morning and switching to S 5-15 this afternoon.  These conditions will assist firefighting efforts relative to what was experienced when the fire was discovered.  Objectives for today include firefighter and public safety, structure protection, hold existing lines, and continue line construction.
