WATERTOWN, S.D. – McLaughlin & Schulz, Inc., a contractor for the South Dakota Department of Transportation, will begin reconstruction work on Highway 20 in Watertown on Tuesday, May 27.
Work will be done in two phases. Phase 1 includes pipe work, milling the existing pavement and placing an asphalt concrete overlay on 4.3 miles of Highway 20 from the water tower at Lake Kampeska south to 10th Avenue NW.
Phase 2 will begin just off Highway 212 north to 10th Avenue NW, 1.5 miles, and includes the same work as Phase 1 with the addition of new traffic lights being installed at three intersections - 3rd Avenue, Kemp Avenue and 4th Avenue.
Due to the varying width and number of lanes through this project, motorists can expect reduced speeds and will need to be aware of the differing traffic control, paying extra attention to signs and traffic control devices.
In areas where there are just two lanes of traffic, motorists can expect a pilot car and flaggers with up to 15 minute delays.
In areas where there are three and four lanes of traffic, driving lanes will be reduced and traffic diverted around the work zone.
The project has a cost of $3.7 million and a completion date of Oct. 10.
