Pierre, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Education and South Dakota State Library (SDSL) invite students and families to explore the activities available through the Summer Library Program. This year’s theme is “Unearth a Story,” with an emphasis on dinosaurs, paleontology, and archaeology.
Through SDSL’s statewide membership with the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), all public libraries across South Dakota have access to participate in the Summer Library Program. This program ensures that libraries of all sizes can offer engaging, literacy-focused summer activities for children, teens, and adults. With these tools, communities across South Dakota can promote reading, spark curiosity, and support learning all summer long.
“The Collaborative Summer Library Program instills confidence in libraries, providing meaningful guidance to promote literacy and learning creatively that appeals to people of all ages,” said South Dakota State Librarian George Seamon. “Libraries are a place of discovery, and incorporating new events, programs, and activities offers a unique experience for everyone who walks through the door.”
Federally recognized public libraries are presented with an opportunity to utilize CSLP’s high-quality resources at no cost. Resources available include themed manuals, artwork, programming ideas, and promotional materials.
“With our current initiative to increase literary success across the state, the Summer Library program is a great way to boost students’ excitement about reading,” said Secretary of Education Dr. Joseph Graves. “Programs like this one not only cater to the interests of children, but also invite the people closest to them to get involved in the students’ reading journey.”
