State Troopers Show Exceptional Courage in High-Risk Shooting Incident, Work Seamlessly with Local Law Enforcement to Ensure Public Safety

Pierre, S.D. — Earlier this month, in a display of swift, decisive action and extraordinary bravery, South Dakota Highway Patrol (SDHP) Troopers, in close coordination with local police, apprehended a violent suspect wanted in connection with the shooting of a law enforcement officer.

The suspect, who had a known history of violent behavior, immediately fired on law enforcement as they arrived on scene. Demonstrating outstanding professionalism and unwavering commitment to public safety, SDHP Troopers moved in with precision and courage, remaining in the fight despite coming under direct gunfire.

“This was a dangerous individual, and our Troopers showed exceptional courage under fire,” said SDHP Superintendent Col. Casey Collins. “They relied on their training, stayed composed under extreme pressure, and acted with the sole purpose of protecting the public and their fellow officers. I could not be more proud of their bravery.”

The incident is a strong reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face each day, and it highlights the strength of interagency cooperation across South Dakota. The seamless teamwork between state and local agencies exemplifies a unified law enforcement community, standing together as one team to protect the people of South Dakota.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol remains committed to the highest standards of service and safety, and this example reflects that enduring mission.

The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
