Three More Statehood Celebration Committees Organize

PIERRE, S.D. – Three more statehood celebration committees will be promoting state and local history with activities during South Dakota's 125th birthday year.

New local committees have organized in Minnehaha County, Tripp and Sisseton.

“I appreciate the hard work and effort South Dakotans are putting in to make our 125th anniversary special. I would especially like to thank those who are organizing lasting legacy projects,” said Gov. Dennis Daugaard.

The Minnehaha County Historical Society’s Statehood Celebration Committee will be giving 125th statehood magnets to all fourth grade students in Minnehaha County in September. Fourth grade is traditionally when South Dakota history is taught. The society will also use the 125th anniversary theme at all of its meetings September through December.

Tripp will host the 125th Anniversary of Statehood Wagon Train with dinner at the fairgrounds and a Fireman’s Dance on Main Street on Saturday night, Sept. 6, and a breakfast and Cowboy Church on Sunday morning, Sept. 7. Proceeds from events will go to community projects, including the new downtown city park.

In Sisseton, committee members continue their historical activity of interviewing and recording elderly residents to preserve family stories and local historical events. Those interested in recording or listening to recordings can do so at the Heritage Museum of Roberts County, the Stavig House Museum, the Nicollet Tower Interpretive Center and Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate tribal archivist Tamara St. John.

Over the next two weeks, several communities will hold celebrations and annual festivals with history themes: Stickney and Bowdle, Aug. 2; Carthage, Aug. 2-3; and Geddes and Castlewood, Aug. 8-10.

Information about those events and about creating a local committee is available at 125.sd.gov under the “Community Events” and “Celebration Communities” tabs.
