Author O’Brien to join H&H Book Club discussion

PIERRE, S.D. -- Author Dan O’Brien will join the discussion when the History and Heritage Book Club meets Tuesday, July 14, at 7 p.m. at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre.

Book club members will discuss Buffalo for the Broken Heart. O’Brien, of Whitewood, is the author of numerous books of fiction and nonfiction about the West. His first novel, 1987’s The Spirit of the Hills, won a Spur Award. His novel The Contract Surgeon won the 2000 Western Heritage Award for Fiction. Buffalo for the Broken Heart is O’Brien’s memoir of introducing bison to his West River ranch, the Broken Heart.

The book club meeting will start with Tom LeFaive, the manager of Bad River Ranches south of Fort Pierre, telling about bison. Connie Jacobs of Pierre will lead the evening’s discussion.

“We feel privileged to have Dan O’Brien join in the discussion via conference call. Everyone is welcome to attend the book club, hear what Dan and Tom have to say and be part of the discussion,” said Patricia Miller, president of the South Dakota Heritage Fund.

The Heritage Fund sponsors the History and Heritage Book Club and is the nonprofit financial partner of the South Dakota State Historical Society, located in the Cultural Heritage Center.

Buffalo for the Broken Heart is the 2009 One-Book South Dakota program selection. The program encourages as many people statewide to read and discuss the same title in a six-month period. Sponsors are the South Dakota Humanities Council, American State Bank, Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, South Dakota Heritage Fund, Prairie Pages Bookseller and Rawlins Library.
