South Dakota communities team up to recruit medical device companies to state

PIERRE, S.D. - Eleven communities across South Dakota are joining forces with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) to bring more businesses to South Dakota. Leaders from those communities and GOED officials will attend the Medical Design and Manufacturing (MD&M) trade show in Minneapolis Oct. 20-22.

“The state has been targeting medical device manufacturers for some time, and this show is a great way for us to showcase South Dakota’s advantageous business climate and develop new leads,” said Richard Benda, Secretary of the Department of Tourism and State Development. “The MD&M show is among the top shows in the industry. Banding together to represent South Dakota as a unified entity has proved to be a very effective recruitment tool.”

The effort is a result of the GOED’s cooperative marketing program, which was put in place last year to increase business recruitment through collaboration between the state and its communities. The communities attending the show are: Aberdeen, Brookings, Madison, Mitchell, North Sioux City, Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Vermillion, Watertown and Yankton. Also attending are representatives from the Lincoln and Minnehaha Economic Development Association.

“Though this cooperative strategy is relatively new, similar efforts at other trade shows have already proved to increase our results considerably,” Benda said.

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development is a division of the Department of Tourism and State Development. GOED’s primary goal is to move South Dakota’s economy forward through business development.
