McCook County Fatal Crash
What: Two-vehicle fatal crash
When: Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, 2:26 p.m.
Where: Interstate 90, three miles east of Salem
Driver 1: Lisa Marie Brodersen, 44, Sioux Falls, fatal
Passenger 1: Karly R. Brodersen, 14, Sioux Falls, minor injuries
Vehicle 1: 2005 Cadillac Deville
Driver 2: Gerald Myron Vandekieft, 43, Brandon, no injuries
Vehicle 2: 1993 Chevrolet K10
SALEM, S.D. – A 44-year-old Sioux Falls woman died in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 east of Salem on Sunday afternoon.
Lisa Marie Brodersen died when the 2005 Cadillac Deville she was driving struck the rear end of a 1993 Chevrolet K10 driven by Gerald Myron Vandekieft, 43, Brandon. Vandekieft was parked near a spot where a third vehicle had gone into the ditch. The driver of the third vehicle, Amanda L. Lauck, 20, of Brandon, was in the Vandekieft vehicle waiting for a tow truck. The roadway was ice-covered and slippery. Brodersen was in the passing lane when her vehicle drifted sideways into the Vandekieft vehicle.
Karly R. Brodersen, 14, a passenger in the Cadillac, suffered minor injuries. Neither Vandekieft nor Lauck was injured.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol investigated, assisted by the McCook County Sheriff and Salem Ambulance.
