Director for the South Dakota Developmental Center appointed

(Pierre) Betty Oldenkamp, Secretary for the Department of Human Services, announced the appointment of Ted Williams, Ed.D., as Director of the South Dakota Developmental Center in Redfield.

Williams has been Acting Director since that position was vacated in July of 2001. Williams began his employment at the South Dakota Development Center in July of 1976 until October of 1985. Williams returned to the South Dakota Developmental Center in June of 1987 where he has been employed since.

"Ted Williams is a proven performer. He has provided creative leadership in the development of many successful treatment programs. His ingenuity and talent will lead the Developmental Center into its second century of service." Oldenkamp said.

Williams holds a Doctor of Education in School Psychology with specialization in behavior management, is a licensed Psychologist with the State of South Dakota, and is a nationally certified school psychologist. He retired as a Lt. Colonel from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1997 after a 24-year career. He has held a variety of positions at the Developmental Center since 1976 including the position of psychologist and clinical supervisor of the mental health staff. Along with consulting with many community agencies and schools across the state, he has presented numerous workshops on behavioral and mental health issues that affect individuals with developmental disabilities.

"I look forward to the opportunity to serve the state and the South Dakota Developmental Center in this new capacity. Over the years, I have seen many changes in the way South Dakota provides services to people with developmental disabilities. I believe that today the entire statewide service delivery system has evolved to the point where we all have a common goal – to provide the best possible supports and services to all people with developmental disabilities. SDDC is one part of this continuum of services, but a very important part. I plan to continue working closely with individuals and agencies from across the state to ensure people with developmental disabilities have the opportunity to reach their maximum level of independence. I also look forward to continuing the cooperative relationship that SDDC and the City of Redfield have developed over the past years." Williams said.
