State Will Honor Former Gov. Walter Dale Miller On Monday
PIERRE, S.D. – Public viewing will be allowed from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. CDT on Monday, Oct. 5, as former Gov. Walter Dale Miller lies in state at the South Dakota Capitol. Those wishing to pay their respects may enter the Capitol Building via the north doors (parking lot side).
A memorial ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Access to the second-floor Rotunda will be closed at 11 a.m. to allow time to set up for the memorial ceremony. Access will begin at 12:30 p.m. for that ceremony, again via the north doors.
Circle Drive in front of the Capitol will close at 5 p.m. on Sunday and remain closed to the public until after 3 p.m. on Monday.
Rev. David Zellmer, Bishop of the South Dakota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate at the memorial ceremony. Gov. Dennis Daugaard will offer a welcome.
Remembrances will be offered by:
- Marty Jackley of Pierre. Jackley has been the South Dakota Attorney General since 2009 and is a lifelong friend of the Miller family.
- Steve Kirby of Sioux Falls. Kirby served as lieutenant governor in the Miller Administration.
- G. Mark Mickelson of Sioux Falls. Mickelson is a state representative and the son of former Gov. George S. Mickelson.
- Frank Brost of Sioux Falls. Brost served as chief of staff to Gov. Miller and to Gov. Mickelson.
The ceremony will conclude with members of the Highway Patrol carrying the casket down the front steps of the Capitol. As the procession exits the Capitol, there will be a 21-gun salute and taps.
Former Gov. Miller’s funeral service has been set for Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. MDT at the Calvary Lutheran Church, 5311 Sheridan Lake Rd., Rapid City. Burial will follow at Viewfield Cemetery, near Miller’s Meade County ranch.
Gov. Dennis Daugaard has requested that all flags in the state be lowered to half-staff until sunset on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The flag is customarily displayed from sunrise to sunset, but may be displayed for 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
