PIERRE, S.D. – The city of Chamberlain has been awarded a $495,949 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to help construct a 13,000-square-foot youth development center in conjunction with Chamberlain Healthy Community Healthy Youth, Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced today.

The facility will be built on a vacant lot downtown and house a learning/technical center, arts and crafts room, activity room, teen center, multipurpose and exhibit space, and administrative offices.

“Centers like these provide positive influences on our youth,” Gov. Daugaard said. “This is a valuable project for not only young children and teenagers in Chamberlain, but for the community as a whole.”

Chamberlain Healthy Community Healthy Youth is a parent, youth and community partnership dedicated to promoting positive, safe and healthy influences in the greater Chamberlain area through quality child and family development programs.

CDBG is a reimbursement program, and Chamberlain will receive funds as work is completed.

The CDBG program provides communities and counties with financial resources to address a wide range of unique development needs. Past grants have been used for improvements and construction of community buildings, water systems, and sewer systems.

The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the CDBG Program, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development administers it.
