Gov Noem Signs EO Protecting Against Flood Damage and Loss

PIERRE, S.D. – Today, Governor Kristi Noem signed Executive Order 2023-14, which states that South Dakota will comply with National Flooding Insurance Program (NFIP) practices when constructing state buildings.

This EO assures that the state will continue to follow best practices to protect the public’s assets against the risk of flood damage and loss. Many local communities already incorporate these standards into their zoning regulations – now they will apply to state property, as well.

South Dakota is insured for property loss below catastrophic levels and is also eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding through NFIP in the event of a catastrophic flood disaster. This EO applies only to state property and ensures the state remains eligible for FEMA funding.
