Saturday, June 11, Lake Cochrane, 7 p.m. (CDT) - DENR Geological Survey staff will provide an update on DENR activities in the Lake Cochrane area when the Lake Cochrane Improvement Association holds its annual meeting at the lake. DENR Geological Survey activities include drilling, well installation, monitoring surface and ground water levels, and protecting South Dakota’s interests relative to a rural water system in neighboring Minnesota. Sunday-Tuesday, June 12-14, Breckenridge, Colorado – Gov. Mike Rounds will attend the Western Governors Association (WGA) annual meeting. Visit the WGA website at www.westgov.org for the annual meeting agenda.
Monday, June 13, Brookings, 1 p.m. (CDT) – Secretary of Tourism and State Development Jim Hagen and Director of Economic Development Jafar Karim will hold a media briefing to highlight the processor training portion of SOUTH DAKOTA CERTIFIED BEEF. This is the first step for processors to become officially licensed. The briefing will be held in the conference room at the Animal Science Complex on the SDSU Campus. Media outlets can call 1-888-809-4012 and enter access code 7733213 to join the conference. Processors participating in the training will also be available to visit with the media. Media will be able to photograph processors training in the meat lab at SDSU. Tuesday-Thursday, June 14-16, Brookings, 8 a.m. (CDT) – The South Dakota Office of Emergency Management and Office of Homeland Security are offering a Preparedness and Response to Agricultural Terrorism course at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. This course provides local community planners and individuals working in the agricultural industry the tools to identify potential threats to the cultivation, production, processing, distribution and transportation of South Dakota’s agricultural commodities and resources. The course was developed by the Office for Domestic Preparedness in cooperation with Louisiana State University. Tuesday, June 14, Deadwood, 9 a.m. (MDT) - The South Dakota Commission on Gaming will hold its quarterly business meeting and administrative hearings in the city commission room of the Deadwood City Hall. The agenda includes a Petition for Declaratory Ruling on whether the sponsors of a Deadwood poker tournament may charge a tournament entry fee of more than $100, proposed amendments to gaming control rules, and the renewal of all Deadwood gaming business licenses for Fiscal Year 2006. Tuesday, June 14, Pierre, 10 a.m. (CDT) – The Department of Social Services' Division of Child Care Services will sponsor a one-day Project WILD training for after-school program directors and staff at the Ramkota River Centre. Game, Fish and Parks is co-sponsoring the training on Project WILD, a national curriculum supplement designed to teach students about wildlife ecology and management. Tuesday, June 14, Nemo, 5:30-7:30 p.m. (MDT) - The Rapid City Chamber Mixer will be held at the Boxelder Job Corps Center, located in Nemo. Job Corps is celebrating their 40th Anniversary Year of helping economically disadvantaged youth ages 16-24 attain their GED, high school diploma and vocational trade training. Job Corps is provided at no cost to the student, an equivalent of a $25,000 a year scholarship. Student leaders will be giving tours of the Boxelder Center and sharing their experiences. Wednesday, June 15, Eagle Butte, 8:30 a.m. (MDT) - The Department of Revenue and Regulation, along with the Department of Labor, Small Business Development Center, and the Small Business Administration is hosting a Small Business Workshop for new or smaller businesses from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Super 8 Conference Room, Highway 212. Wednesday-Thursday, June 15-16, Lead, 10 a.m. (MDT) – The DENR Board of Minerals and Environment will meet at the Golden Hills Resort, 900 Miners Avenue. The board agenda includes two oil and gas hearings and tours of several mining-related areas in the Black Hills. The oil and gas hearings are for requests for horizontal oil well drilling in Harding County from Bill Barrett Corporation of Denver, Colo. Tour areas include the Homestake Mill Park area, Homestake water treatment plant and water collection system in Central City, Yates waste dump reclamation project, reclamation of the Ruby dump area at the Gilt Edge Mine, Pacer’s Brite-X mica mine and mill near Custer, and an active pegmatite mine near Custer. Thursday, June 16, Brookings, 10 a.m. (CDT) - The Bureau of Administration, Property Management, will be conducting a State surplus property auction sale at the SDSU Motor Pool. The sale will consist of approximately 93 sedans, vans and pickup trucks. Also included in the sale are boat/trailers, ATV's, a popup camper and miscellaneous office furniture and equipment.
