235th Military Police Company notified

RAPID CITY  -  For the third time this year, South Dakota’s Army National Guard could activate another unit, Gov. Bill Janklow said.

The 235th Military Police Company of Custer and Rapid City was notified Wednesday, July 17, that it may possibly be mobilized to support Operation Noble Eagle, America’s war on terrorism.  The notification is intended to make soldiers, family members and employers aware that the 235th is being considered for duty and prepare them for such a possibility.

“We have used them extensively, including security at Mount Rushmore and security after September 11. In no time at all they have become one of the best MP companies in the country, and that’s why they’re being considered for call up. It’s going to be disruptive to their families, it’s going to be disruptive to their employers, but the President of our country says they are needed and once again South Dakota’s soldiers are among the first to be called upon to defend our country,” Janklow said. “Just as we have done for the rest of the soldiers who have been called up, we must see that the needs of their families are met during this difficult time.”

The 124-member unit has a mission to provide military police support and security for enemy prisoners of war and civilian internees.  It also supports the state by providing security during civil disturbances and natural disasters.

In the wake of the increased threat of terrorism, the 235th is providing local security at Camp Rapid and earlier provided security at various state airports.

No details on possible mission and length of deployment were available as of Friday.
