PIERRE, S.D. – The following are news tips from offices and agencies within South Dakota State Government:
 
Monday, February 13, Region 2: Pierre, 4 p.m. (CST) -- The Governor’s Child Seat Program: Project 8 is designed to help educate South Dakota’s parents and guardians about proper child seat use and installation. During Child Passenger Safety Week, Feb. 12-18, South Dakota’s Project 8 is joining with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Ad Council and others to remind all parents and other adults responsible for children traveling in motor vehicles -- if the kids are less than 4’9” tall; they need to be in a booster seat. Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be on hand at the Pierre Fire Station #1 to educate and demonstrate child seat use and installation, starting at 4 p.m. and ending at 7 p.m. For more information, contact Melissa Stech at (605) 773-6949 or visit www.state.sd.us/project8.

Wednesday, February 15, Huron, 7:30 to 9 a.m. (CST)  – The Department of Labor announces Berens and Tate, a labor relations, employment litigation and human resource management law firm from Omaha, will give a breakfast briefing at The Plains located at 960 4th Street NE. They will speak on the topic of ‘Key Strategies To Make Your Employee Handbook Work For You.” The presentation is brought to Huron in cooperation with the Huron Area Human Resource Association. There is no cost to attend the presentation; however, pre-registration is required. Contact Berens and Tate by calling 402-391-1991 between the hours of 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. (CST) by February 10.
 
Wednesday, February 15, Joe Foss Field, Sioux Falls, 9:30 a.m. (CST) - South Dakota Air National Guard mobilization ceremony. A mobilization ceremony will be held for 13 Airmen of the 114th Security Forces Squadron, SDANG, at the AdministrativeBuilding, Joe Foss Field. Maj. Gen. Michael Gorman, adjutant general, as well as military and civic leaders will speak at the ceremony to commend the Airmen and their families for their willingness to serve their state and nation in support of the Global War on Terror. Wednesday, February 15, Mobridge, 12:30 p.m. (CST) - The Department of Labor's MobridgeAreaCareerLearningCenter will be offering 'Financial Skills for Families’ classes every Wednesday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., beginning Feb.15.  The classes will be held at the MobridgeCareerCenter conference room, located at 1415 E. Grand Crossing.  The classes will cover:  personal spending plan and budget, working with checking and saving accounts, understanding credit and building credit and applying for a loan.  Pre-registration is requested by calling Becky, 845-2971.

Thursday-Saturday, February 16-18, Spearfish, 8:30 a.m. (MST) – The 2006 South Dakota Association for the Education of Young Children (SDAEYC)/South Dakota Head Start Association (SDHSA) Conference will be held at the Spearfish Holiday Inn and Convention Center. Approximately 700 early childhood professionals and trainers are expected to attend. Pre-conference sessions will start on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. Conference sessions will focus on leadership, communication with parents, special issues, and ideas for early childhood programs. On Saturday, the conference will host the South Dakota Apprenticeship Program. Sixteen Apprentices will be recognized for their achievements and receive a certificate from the U.S. Dept. of Labor. For more information, contact Melissa Stech, DSS Div. of Child Care Services, 773-6949.
 
Thursday, February 16, Mobridge, 10 a.m. (CST) - The Department of Labor's MobridgeAreaCareerLearningCenter will be offering 'Common Sense Parenting Classes' every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., beginning Feb. 16.  The classes will be held at the MobridgeCareerCenter conference room, located at 1415 E. Grand Crossing. The classes will cover:  effective praise, effective communication, teaching self-control, teaching self-discipline, corrective teaching, and helping your child succeed at school.  Pre-registration is requested by calling Becky, 845-2971. 
 
Thursday, February 16, Region 3: Eagle Butte, 11 a.m. (MST) - The Governor’s Child Seat Program: Project 8 is designed to help educate South Dakota’s parents and guardians about proper child seat use and installation. During Child Passenger Safety Week, Feb. 12-18, South Dakota’s Project 8 is joining with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Ad Council and others to remind all parents and other adults responsible for children traveling in motor vehicles -- if the kids are less than 4’9” tall; they need to be in a booster seat. Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be on hand at the Eagle Butte IHS Ambulance Garage to educate and demonstrate child seat use and installation, starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m. For more information, contact Melissa Stech at (605) 773-6949 or visit www.state.sd.us/project8.
 
Thursday, February 16, Rapid City, 3 p.m. (MST) – The Department of Labor’s South Dakota Career Center (SDCC) will host an Open House for area businesses at the SDCC, located at 111 New York Street. Expanded business services information will be available to business owners and managers. The new BusinessResourceCenter will be introduced and showcased as part of the resources now available to existing, expanding and new businesses. The BusinessResourceCenter allows businesses and employers to hold private interviews, check references, work on business plans and utilize office space. It is equipped with high-speed Internet, computers and phone, printer/fax/copier, and business software. Other partnering agencies will also be present, including:  the Black Hills Regional Job Fair, CareerLearningCenter of the Black Hills, Experience Works, Hill City Chamber, Rapid City Chamber and Economic Development, S.D. Dept. of Revenue, Unemployment Insurance Tax, United Sioux Tribes, Vocational Rehabilitation Services and the WestRiverBusinessServiceCenter. All area businesses are invited and encouraged to attend.
