Moody County, S.D.- Four people died Monday in a three-vehicle crash near Colman, South Dakota.

Names of the people involved have not been released pending notification of family members.

Preliminary crash information indicates the driver of a 2020 Ford Ranger was traveling northbound on I-29 in the southbound lanes near mile marker 119. At the same time, the driver of a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan was traveling southbound on the interstate. The driver of the Dodge began passing a 2017 Peterbilt 389 semi-truck, who was also southbound, and was unable to avoid the Ford traveling in the wrong direction. The Dodge and the Ford collided head-on. The Dodge was then struck by the Peterbilt, causing the semi to jackknife.

All four occupants of the Dodge were ejected from the vehicle. The driver and two of her passengers sustained fatal injuries. The third passenger was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital with life threatening injuries. The driver of the Ford was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the semi was not injured.

I-29’s southbound lanes were closed for approximately six hours.

The investigation is ongoing. All information released is preliminary.
