September 2008 - Regional Fire Schools -Volunteer firefighters all across the state have a chance to practice their skills this month. The Chamberlain Volunteer Fire Department will host the Central District Fall Fire School on Sunday, Sept. 14. On Sunday, Sept. 21, the McIntosh Volunteer Fire Department will host the Northwest District, the Platte Volunteer Fire Department will host the South Central District, and Winner Volunteer Fire Department will host the Badlands District. Saturday, September 13, Spearfish, noon (MDT) - National Guard Annual Battle of the Blades - Member of the 842nd Engineer Company (Horizontal), South Dakota Army National Guard, will host the sixth annual Battle of the Blades/Slashing Steel 2008 Open House at the Spearfish City Rubble Site, north of Spearfish on Highway 85. Monday-Tuesday, September 15-16, Watertown, 8:30 a.m. (CDT) - The South Dakota Board of Education will meet at Lake Area Technical Institute (Tech Building, Room 105). Items on the agenda include a public hearing on proposed changes to South Dakota's Birth to Three program, a proposed change that would offer options for defining a unit of credit rather than just traditional "seat time," and a report on 2008 assessment results. Friday, September 19, Redfield, 8 a.m. (CDT) - The South Dakota Developmental Center (SDDC) will host the annual Family and Friends Day on the SDDC campus. The theme this year is "Recreate in 2008," commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Activity Center. Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. in the Chapel. The opening ceremony, with the Redfield High School Marching Band and Flag Corps, will begin at 9 a.m. A family informational meeting will be held in the administration building auditorium at 9:30 a.m. The awards ceremony will be held in the campus gym at 10:15 a.m. Lunch will be in the Activity Center beginning at 11:15 a.m. with musical entertainment provided by Dale Fiedler. Friday-Sunday, September 19-21, Aberdeen - The 2nd Annual South Dakota Film Festival will take place in downtown Aberdeen’s historic Capitol Theatre, 417 S. Main Street. The festival will showcase 32 official film selections and feature an outdoor technology expo, beginning on Saturday. The festival is a collaborative effort between the Aberdeen Film Society and the Aberdeen Community Theatre. The mission of the festival is to provide a venue for Midwest filmmakers to screen films and to provide educational and networking opportunities. It is funded in part by South Dakota Tourism, Capitol Cinema and Governor Mike Rounds’ Million Dollar Challenge program. Saturday, September 20, Rapid City, 4 p.m. (MDT) - National Guard Freedom Salute Ceremony - Soldiers from Detachment 3, Company A, 641st Aviation Regiment will be honored for their service to the nation at a National Guard Freedom Salute Ceremony at the Army Aviation Support Facility next to the Rapid City Regional Airport. The public is encouraged to attend. The South Dakota Army National Guard unit recently returned in May from a six-month tour in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During the deployment, the unit provided aviation support to units in theater and was stationed at Logistical Support Area Anaconda, about 45 miles north of Baghdad.
