SIOUX FALLS, SD – Governor Larry Rhoden has recognized September 19, 2025, as POW/MIA Recognition Day, a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring and remembering the sacrifices of the nation’s prisoners of war (POWs) and those still missing in action (MIA).

“As a veteran myself, I understand the profound significance of this day,” said Jeremiah Schneider, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs. “We owe an enduring debt to our prisoners of war and those missing in action, and we continue to advocate tirelessly for their recovery and recognition,” Schneider added.

Currently, South Dakota honors six veterans still unaccounted for from the Vietnam War, 33  from the Korean War, and 310 from World War II.

South Dakotans are encouraged to participate in local observances, display the POW/MIA flag, and support the families of these brave service members.
