SDSU Offers New Minor Programs
RAPID CITY, S.D. – New minors in food safety and horticulture have been approved at South Dakota State University.
The South Dakota Board of Regents approved SDSU’s request to offer the two 18 credit-hour minors. The food safety minor would be available next semester, while the horticulture minor would first be available to students starting next fall.
SDSU officials said the food safety minor would significantly increase the marketability of graduates in the food and agricultural disciplines. The food industry is demanding more well-trained people knowledgeable in food safety, and students pursuing this minor will be exposed to subject matter in food production technology, epidemiology, microbiology, and engineering principles.
The horticulture minor was developed in response to ongoing demand from students pursuing degrees in landscape architecture and park and recreation resources at SDSU. Many of these students said they would have taken advantage of the horticulture minor if it had been offered. SDSU already offers a major in horticulture.
By the fourth year of program implementation, SDSU estimates as many as 40 students could be taking the horticulture minor and another 25 enrolled in the food safety minor. No new state resources were requested to develop or implement these minors.
