State-Tribal Relations Day to highlight Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP)

PIERRE, S.D. – The 2026 State-Tribal Relations Day will take place on February 25 at the Capitol Rotunda in Pierre, from 10 AM to 1:30 PM.

The theme of this year’s State-Tribal Relations Day is “Bringing Awareness to the MMIP Crisis Through Collaboration.” The purpose of State-Tribal Relations Day is to provide opportunities for state, tribal, and legislative leaders to network and engage in issues impacting South Dakota Tribes and Native American constituents.

This year’s event is dedicated to spreading awareness about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) crisis by bringing together MMIP organizations to foster collaboration, awareness, and dialogue. Our goal is to unite MMIP groups, Tribal Leaders, and State Legislators to explore solutions and strengthen partnerships.

According to the South Dakota Missing Persons website, as of January 1, 2026, 61% of the 118 individuals listed as missing were Native American.

“We must never forget the lives lost and the families still searching for answers,” stated South Dakota Department of Tribal Relations Secretary Algin Young. "This day is about honoring those impacted by the MMIP crisis and committing to work together for justice and prevention."

The event is open to the public. Formal invitations have been extended to all nine Tribal Leaders and Councils. Anyone interested in or concerned about the MMIP crisis is encouraged to attend and participate in this important discussion.
