Experience Native American Culture in Chamberlain
PIERRE, S.D. – Native American culture abounds in the South Dakota community of Chamberlain.
At Saint Joseph’s IndianSchool, visitors may tour the AktaLakotaMuseum and CulturalCenter. Akta Lakota is a living museum, which means contemporary Native American art can be viewed along with the artifacts of the past.
“People who come to see the AktaLakotaMuseum get to see firsthand how the Native Americans of the past and present live,” said Dixie Thompson of the St. Joseph’s IndianSchool. “It helps them to understand the community and how it came to be.”
Visitors to Chamberlain also have the opportunity to attend a traditional Native American pow-wow, or wacipi. On Saturday, May 17, 2008, Chamberlain will hold a pow-wow at the National Guard Armory to honor local students. Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend.
